Year 9 students showcase enterprise at market day

Three classes of Year 9 entrepreneurial risk-takers took to the Macleans College amphitheatre recently to sell their delicious products in the hope of making a profit.

The rain held off for the final market day of the year, allowing 26 business teams to promote their baking and beverages.  Although senior students were away on study leave, the amphitheatre remained busy as junior students explored the stalls.

The displays featured home-made items such as cupcakes, chocolate-covered brownies, churros, milkshakes and bubble tea, along with many other treats.

Students were challenged to sell as much stock as possible during the 35 minutes of lunchtime.  One student noted, ‘I learnt that the market can be intense, but not selling out is not the end of the world.’  Another reflected, ‘I learned how to stay calm under pressure from customers arriving early and products being wasted or spilt.’

Regardless of profit, students enjoyed the experience of selling to their peers.  The event may well have inspired some future entrepreneurs.
