Teamwork and determination carry Year 11s through Coromandel adventure

The Macleans College Year 11 Challenge students braved cold conditions to complete a multi-day hike in the Coromandel Ranges.
Temperatures dropped so low that ice formed both inside and outside their tents. Despite the cold, the students covered 36 kilometres over two days, hiking from Thames to Crosbies Hut and back.
The first leg took five and a half hours, climbing 837 metres to the campsite. At the summit, they were rewarded with sweeping views of the Coromandel Peninsula, stretching as far as Whitianga. After dinner and an early night, they prepared for the return journey the following day.
The students showed impressive resilience throughout the challenge. They carried heavy packs, faced steep climbs and pushed through sore muscles, yet their teamwork and encouragement for one another never faltered.
