Exploring ancient art: students try traditional Chinese woodblock printing
Posted on July 04, 2025
During the final week of Term 2, Year 9 and Year 10 Macleans College students welcomed woodblock printing artists to their classroom for a hands-on workshop.
Woodblock printing is an ancient Chinese art form that dates back thousands of years. It involves carving designs or text into wooden blocks, applying ink and pressing the blocks onto paper or fabric. This technique enabled the mass production of books and religious texts, helping to spread knowledge and literacy throughout China.
Through active participation in this traditional craft, students developed a deeper appreciation for the ingenuity of ancient cultures and the richness of Chinese heritage. The workshop was a meaningful way to conclude their Chinese studies for the term.
