Macleans College students experience life in Japan
Posted on October 15, 2025
Two Macleans College students of Japanese Language recently spent two unforgettable weeks in Japan as part of the Ashiya Gakuen Exchange Program.
Year 12 student Paris Huynh (Snell House) and Year 11 student Jessie McAra-Jiramongkolchai (Upham) were warmly welcomed into the Ashiya Gakuen High School community in Osaka. They joined their host students in daily classes, experienced the rhythm of Japanese school life and took part in club activities alongside new friends. The exchange offered a rare opportunity to live and learn within another culture while strengthening their language skills in real-world settings.
Outside the classroom, the students explored the sights and flavours of Japan. From feeding the friendly deer at Nara Park to tasting local favourites such as okonomiyaki and takoyaki, every day brought something new to discover. These moments offered a deeper understanding of Japan’s unique blend of tradition and modernity.
Equally memorable were the connections formed with their host families and classmates. Even simple activities - sharing meals, visiting local shops or playing games together - became opportunities for laughter, language learning and cultural exchange. Both students spoke fondly of the kindness and generosity shown by their hosts, describing how quickly the houses they stayed in began to feel like home.
Paris reflected on how the experience allowed her to see Japanese learning come to life beyond the classroom. Observing differences in teaching styles, joining the art club and communicating in Japanese each day helped her grow in confidence and fluency. Jessie shared similar feelings, expressing her admiration for Japan’s considerate way of life and how effortlessly tradition blended into daily routines. She found joy in the little things - from the politeness of students bowing to their elders to the endless charm of Japan’s vending machines.
Both students returned home inspired to continue learning Japanese and grateful for the friendships and memories made along the way. They described the exchange as not only a highlight of their studies, but a life-changing journey of discovery and connection.
Macleans College extends its sincere thanks to Ashiya Gakuen High School, the host families and everyone who helped make this exchange such a warm and enriching experience. Special thanks are also extended to Macleans College teacher Ms Hoshino, whose care and dedication ensured the exchange was successful.
