Year 10 Macleans College student Laura Yang (Kupe House) has won a bronze prize at the Cultures of China Water Cube Cup, an international Chinese songs contest held in Beijing.

Laura earned her place on the global stage after progressing through three national rounds, ultimately placing first in New Zealand. After two rounds of international competition, she advanced to the grand finals at the National Aquatics Center, known as the Water Cube, in the Overseas Division Youth Group Finals.

Reflecting on the experience, Laura said, ‘Travelling to Beijing and meeting so many talented people from around the world was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It gave me the chance to exchange cultures, improve my Mandarin and gain valuable experience as both a performer and a person. I grew in confidence, discovered more about myself and felt proud to represent New Zealand on such a big stage.’

Laura encourages her peers to get involved in different opportunities - be challenged, embrace growth and have fun.

Her success comes in a competition that attracts thousands of participants from across the world. This year marked the 15th anniversary of the event, with more than 7,200 contestants from 31 countries and five continents taking part. Organisers described the Water Cube Cup as a cultural bridge that connects communities worldwide, with the final gala livestreamed internationally.

Contestants were judged on vocal technique, proficiency in Chinese and artistic expression. Laura’s passion for music has been central to her success. At school, she is a member of the Macleans College Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Sinfonietta.

Laura’s bronze prize is a proud achievement that highlights her commitment to music and her ability to represent her community with distinction on the international stage.
