Year 12 Macleans College student Manija Mohammed (Mansfield House) was selected to participate in Girls Who Own - a leadership development programme run by New Zealand grocery company Foodstuffs.
The five-day internship is designed for young women aged 16-20 who aspire to become business owners or leaders in the retail industry.
The programme began with a focus on mental health and mindfulness, setting a positive and reflective tone for the week ahead.
On the second day, participants heard from four owner-operators from across New Zealand. Among them was Kym Samuels, owner-operator of New World Morrinsville, who delivered an inspiring presentation. The day also included one-one-one coaching sessions and a networking lunch with senior leaders and store owners.
Days three and four featured store visits. Manija toured PAK’nSAVE Albany and New World Waiuku, gaining behind-the-scenes experience. She assisted with online orders and even helped in the bakery - baking and decorating cupcakes and donuts.
The final day involved reflection on the week’s experiences, followed by a tour of the Landing Drive Distribution Centre and the Foodstuffs support centre in Mangere. Manija described the team culture as ‘welcoming and positive.’
The week concluded with a keynote address by Sacha Coburn, Director and Chief Operating Officer of Coffee Culture, who has also worked with Les Mills and studied at Harvard University on a scholarship. Her energetic and engaging talk left a lasting impression.
Reflecting on the programme, Manija said, ‘The whole week gave me a new perspective on leadership and business. I came away more confident and excited about the future.’
