Eight Macleans College students from across all year levels took part in the NIWA South and East Auckland Science Fair this year, held at Howick College on 22 August.
The prizegiving took place on 28 August at Mission Heights Junior College, where judges praised the high standard of work and were impressed by the creativity and scientific thinking on display.
Several students achieved notable recognition:
- Jessica Jee (Snell House) was awarded second place overall in the Senior Science Category for her project Our Painted Perception. She also won the special award for Best Year 11 Innovation, Invention or Investigation.
- Maisy Chen (Mansfield) and Amy Gao (Te Kanawa) earned a Highly Commended in the Years 9-10 Physical and Material Category for their project WoolShield: Fire Blanket for Nature.
Other Macleans College entrants included Tina Chong (Te Kanawa), Tiana Sharma (Rutherford), Haritha Radhakrishnan (Batten), Alice South (Mansfield) and Tamsyn McCamish (Mansfield). All students demonstrated perseverance and commitment through months of dedicated research.
The Science Fair provides students with the chance to explore independent research in areas that interest them and to engage with scientists from a range of STEM industries during judging.
Macleans College looks forward to an even larger group of students taking part in 2026. It is never too early to start thinking about how your passion could become next year’s project.
