Over the weekend of 22-23 February, the Macleans College rowing squad travelled to Lake Karapiro to compete in the AON Junior Regatta.

This annual event, which is also part of the Auckland Secondary Schools Championships, saw participation from not only Auckland schools but also competitors from across New Zealand.

This year’s regatta was notably larger than in previous years, with a record 1,600 rowers from 60 schools taking part. The competition was fierce, with many events featuring five or six heats, each comprising between 40 and 48 boats.

The A finals were determined through the standard competitive format, but medals and points were awarded based on each crew’s performance relative to other Auckland schools in their respective events.

The Macleans College rowing squad performed exceptionally well, making it into 13 A finals and six B finals. They finished with an impressive haul of five gold, five silver and four bronze medals - an achievement that speaks to their skill, dedication and teamwork.

Despite facing strong competition from a large field of Auckland’s top rowing schools, the Macleans College rowing squad put in a remarkable performance, proving that they can punch well above their weight.
