Macleans College celebrates rising football talent

Posted on December 11, 2025

Former Macleans College student Nathan Martin (Snell House 2022 - 2025) has taken an exciting step in his football career, signing a professional contract with Auckland FC earlier this year.

Balancing both study and sport, Nathan has transitioned to online learning to meet the demands of professional training and competition.

At Auckland FC, Nathan plays as a midfielder for the Reserves squad, which competes in the Dettol National League - New Zealand’s premier domestic football competition.  Before joining Auckland FC, he played for several clubs, including Fencibles United AFC, Bucklands Beach AFC and Eastern Suburbs AFC.

Nathan’s hard work and dedication were recognised when he recently represented New Zealand at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.  Although the New Zealand team exited the tournament after a 4-1 loss to Austria in their final Group L match, the experience was an invaluable milestone in Nathan’s sporting journey.

As a gesture of gratitude, Nathan has donated one of his World Cup match shirts to Macleans College - a proud reminder of his achievements and the talent nurtured within the school community.

Nathan joins a growing list of Macleans College alumni making their mark in professional football, including Liam Gillion (Snell House 2016), who plays for Auckland FC, and Nathan Walker (Snell House 2019 - 2023) who represents the Wellington Phoenix in the A-League Men’s competition.

In other football news, Olivia Brazier (Te Kanawa House) and Lauren Billings (Hillary) recently celebrated success with the Fencibles Under-18 Women’s Football team, who were crowned Youth National League Champions.  The team went undefeated throughout the national competition, playing weekly home and away fixtures against leading clubs from across the country, including trips to Wellington and the South Island.

This achievement follows closely after their victory in the Club Under-19 National Football Tournament, marking another outstanding milestone for both players.
