Relay team victory secures historic first for Macleans College orienteers

Fourteen Macleans College students represented the school at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Orienteering Championships, held in Auckland from Friday 11 - Sunday 13 July. The event attracted competitors from schools across the country.

Sprint Series – St Cuthbert’s College - Friday 11 July

The sprint event was particularly demanding. Heavy rain, strong winds and persistent fog created slippery surfaces and deep mud throughout the course. The complex layout of the school grounds added to the challenge.

Despite the difficult conditions, Macleans College students demonstrated resilience and focus. Several delivered impressive individual performances, setting a strong tone for the reminder of the championship series.

Special recognition goes to Tamsyn McCamish (Mansfield House), who earned a silver medal and a well-deserved place on the podium.

Long Series – Woodhill Forest - Saturday 12 July

Five Macleans College students competed in the long-course event held at Woodhill Forest. The course featured uneven terrain, steep climbs and a fast downhill finish. Students showed strong navigation skills and endurance to complete the event successfully.

Relay Series – Woodhill Forest - Sunday 13 July

The junior relay team - Tamsyn McCamish, Emery Cai (Snell), and Shaun Cai (Snell) - delivered an outstanding performance on the final day.

The team gained an early lead on the fast-paced forest course and maintained it to cross the finish line about a minute ahead of their nearest competitors. Their efforts were rewarded with a gold medal.

This victory secured Macleans College’s first-ever championship title in the event’s history.
