Macleans College celebrates success at National Shakespeare Finals

Posted on June 30, 2025

Over King’s Birthday weekend, Macleans College proudly represented the Auckland South and East Region at the SGCNZ Victoria University of Wellington National Shakespeare Finals, held at the iconic St James Theatre in Wellington.

Following their success at the Regional Shakespeare Festival last term, Dani Gonzalez Castro (Mansfield House) and Ariana Hayward (Batten) were selected to perform at the national event.

The pair presented a witty and imaginative five-minute scene from Much Ado About Nothing, reimagined with a vibrant 1950s twist. Dani, who also directed the piece, entertained audiences with his Elvis-inspired portrayal of Benedick. Ariana delivered a sharp and charming performance as Beatrice, capturing both the humour and emotion of Shakespeare’s classic comedy.

They performed alongside 47 other top groups from across New Zealand in a weekend filled with theatrical talent and creativity. Highlights included a bold Barbie-themed version of The Taming of the Shrew and a high-energy, comedic take on Love’s Labour’s Lost.

Beyond performing, students participated in professional workshops led by industry experts. They also attended a thought-provoking production at Circa Theatre and enjoyed a scenic ride on Wellington’s famous cable car - completing a weekend rich in artistic exploration and cultural connection.

From more than 300 student performers, only 23 were selected to attend the National Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP) - an intensive, week-long residential programme led by some of New Zealand’s top Shakespearean directors. Macleans College are proud to announce that Dani was chosen for this honour, recognised for his dynamic performance and creative direction.

This is an outstanding achievement, and the school wish Dani every success as he takes this exciting next step in his theatrical journey.

Macleans College extends sincere thanks to SGCNZ for organising the event and for offering performers across the country such an inspiring opportunity.
