National Media Literacy Week: helping young people act wisely online
Posted on May 30, 2025
This week marks National Media Literacy Week, an initiative led by the Media Studies Subject Association. The campaign highlights the growing presence of media in young people’s lives and the essential skills needed to navigate it safely and responsibly.
Throughout the week, the student daily notices have featured resources and information aligned with five key themes: access, analyse, evaluate, create and act. Each theme explores a specific aspect of how young people engage with media, including social media. Topics covered included privacy, misinformation and the impact of artificial intelligence.
Research shows that young people are spending more time online and interacting with digital content. A recent professional development session held for staff at Macleans College examined some of the risks associated with platforms such as YouTube and Discord. Concerns included algorithm-driven exposure to extreme content and the risks of online interactions with unfamiliar individuals.
