Macleans College recently celebrated Maths Week with a lively programme of events that highlighted the fun and creativity of mathematics.

The week began on Monday with maths trivia during form time, followed by the Inter-House Mathex Competition at lunch. More than 150 competitors took part, cheered on by large crowds. In a close contest, Mansfield House's Year 9 team secured first place with 100 points, while Hillary House’s Year 10 team claimed second with 90 points. Staff also joined the challenge, with the Support Staff team emerging victorious.

Wednesday’s highlight was the Rubik’s Cube Competition, which continues to grow each year. The event drew an enthusiastic audience and created a lively atmosphere throughout lunch.

On Thursday, students attended a tangram workshop, working in teams to solve puzzles and explore creative ways of forming shapes and patterns. The activity encouraged problem-solving, collaboration and imagination.

The week concluded with the Pi Recital Competition. Students tested their memory by recalling as many digits of Pi as possible. Connor Hu-Wen (Snell House) impressed the crowd by reciting 174 digits in 75 seconds, securing first place.

The Maths Week committee also held a Maths Art Competition. Areeba Zabrina (Hillary) was named winner for her intricate 3D model made from Uno cards, which captured the admiration of both staff and students.

For the first time, a House Shield was awarded, with students earning points for their whānau House through participation in events. Hillary House claimed the inaugural shield - showing outstanding enthusiasm and involvement across the week.

Maths Week was made possible by the dedication of the student committee, guided by Mrs Carlson and Mr Vickers. Their efforts ensured the week was both engaging and successful.
