Macleans College advances to international stage in Mathematics Modelling Competition

A group of Macleans College students have been selected to represent New Zealand at the International Mathematics Modelling Competition (IMMC).

The team of Alston Yam (Mansfield House), Jay Zhao (Rutherford), Bruce Zhang (Mansfield) and Michael Lu (Mansfield) were chosen alongside a group from Westlake Boys High School. This marks the third consecutive year Macleans College has received this honour.

Seventeen teams from across New Zealand entered the competition, including four teams from Macleans College. The event was a true team effort, challenging students to solve real-world problems using a variety of mathematical approaches.

Each team was given five days to complete a project. The Macleans College teams worked on their projects during the April school holidays. The task involved independent research on a topic provided by the organisers. This year’s challenge was to develop a scheduling system for a global sports league spanning eight months and involving 20 teams. Students were required to apply scientifically validated methods and present a practical solution.

The submissions from Macleans College and Westlake Boys High School have now been sent to international adjudicators. Final results will be announced in June.
