Hands-on learning: Macleans College ESOL students explore Auckland Museum
Posted on October 30, 2025
Macleans College’s 01JSOS ESOL class recently brought history and science to life with a dynamic, hands-on learning day at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
Students explored wonders of the past and the natural world, engaging directly with exhibits that made learning both exciting and memorable. The students didn’t just read about history and science - they experienced it firsthand.
The day featured two key learning sessions. In the first session, a museum educator introduced students to the volcanoes that shaped Auckland. They examined real volcanic rocks from the museum’s collection, gaining a tangible understanding of geological processes.
In the second session, students explored the history of Māori settlement. Guided by an expert, they handled historical Māori artifacts, connecting personally with the lives of those who came before them.
Students also enjoyed exploring other museum highlights, including the interactive volcanic eruption room and the popular dinosaur exhibit.
This successful trip was made possible through the dedication of the teaching staff. Thank you to Mrs Restauro and Mrs Aye for their support.
