Macleans College was proud to welcome back one of its distinguished alumni, Saffron Huang (Rutherford House 2011 - 2015), a Harvard University graduate and emerging voice in the field of artificial intelligence.
Currently working in the Social Impacts team at the leading AI research company Anthropic, Saffron returned to speak with students about her journey and the importance of personal growth. Her message focused on resilience, initiative and the power of self-determination.
Addressing an engaged audience, Saffron emphasised the value of personal agency in today’s unpredictable world. She encouraged students to be proactive, seek out opportunities and take control of their futures rather than waiting for success to arrive.
She advised that academic achievements, while important, are only part of the picture. Real progress, she explained, comes from seeking practical experience and personal development beyond the classroom. Saffron noted that even a degree from a prestigious university is no guarantee of success without the ability to demonstrate real-world impact and initiative.
Reflecting on her time at Harvard University, Saffron explained that the most compelling applicants are those who demonstrate direction, a willingness to grow and a genuine passion for their pursuits. Independent projects, personal accomplishments and meaningful engagement with mentors are all markers of this mindset.
Saffron’s visit left a strong impression on both students and staff. Her insights served as a powerful reminder that ambition, authenticity and initiative are key to success - both in education and beyond.
