Field study at Tongariro National Park: Year 12 geographers collect data
Posted on June 04, 2025
Last month, 41 Year 12 Geography students from Macleans College took part in an overnight field trip to Tongariro National Park, located in the central North Island.
The students were accompanied by Mrs Glasgow-Palmer, Mr Hamilton, Mr Paterson and Mr Percival.
The purpose of the trip was to collect primary data on vegetation, soil types, climate, altitude and landforms surrounding Mount Ruapehu - New Zealand’s largest active volcano. This data will be analysed and presented as part of an internal research assessment.
Along the way, the group visited several notable sites, including Otorohanga, known as the Kiwiana capital of the world, the iconic big carrot in Ohakune, the Whakapapa Visitor Centre and Lake Taupō.
