Sportsmanship and skill lead Macleans College to fencing success

Macleans College fencers have recently delivered impressive performances across three major events - the Fencing North Secondary Team and Individual Competition, the McLeavy Memorial Competition and the Fencing North Team’s Competition.
From strong individual placings to qualifying for the national championships, this group of fencers showcased skill, determination and exemplary sportsmanship.
The Fencing North Secondary Team and Individual Competition saw an excellent turn out by Macleans College fencers, with many competing for the first time.
Martin Cassassolles (Upham House), a recently arrived international student, earned a commendable fifth place in the Men’s Individual Foil in his debut competition representing Macleans College.
Students not only performed with skill and discipline but also displayed outstanding conduct. The Regional Co-ordinator described them as respectful and ‘very well-balanced’ young people.

At the Fencing North Team’s Competition on Monday 30 June, the Men’s Foil A-Team - Larry Lin, Matt Wang, Maxwell Chen (Upham) and Stacy Chong (Snell) - placed second overall, securing a place at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Fencing Championships in Christchurch. The Ladies’ Sabre Team - Clare Wang, Yunmin Lee (Rutherford), Cecilia Ma (Mansfield) and Bailey Young (Upham) - also qualified to represent the region at the national event.
The McLeavy Memorial Competition on Saturday 20 July attracted the best fencers from across New Zealand. Matt Wang (Mansfield) achieved the team’s highest placing, earning a bronze medal, while Daniel Farrelly-Grace (Mansfield) also delivered a strong performance.
Macleans College is proud of its fencers, not only for their results but also for the way they conducted themselves. They proved themselves worthy ambassadors for both the school and their families.
