Hands-on STEM: Macleans College students tackle EPro8 Challenge
Posted on August 15, 2025
EPro8 is an annual nationwide STEM challenge introducing young Kiwis to science, engineering and problem-solving.
Macleans College sent three teams of four students to compete in the East Auckland EPro8 Inter-school Series, hosted by neighbouring Pakūranga College. The event offered valuable learning opportunities, building not only STEM knowledge but also resilience and teamwork skills.
Each team was assigned one of twelve workstations equipped with aluminium rods, screws, nuts, plastic joiners and EPro8’s easy-to-use electronics. A detailed challenge booklet guided the teams through this year’s projects, which included creating a foosball setup, a shopping cart, a laser tag game and barrier gates.
The 2025 competition placed a strong emphasis on electronics, with many challenges involving complex circuits and automation. A highlight for many participants was designing a fully automated barrier gate, similar to those used in car parks, which required precision and problem-solving skills.
Macleans College students approached the event with enthusiasm and determination. They worked collaboratively, explored creative solutions and demonstrated perseverance when faced with obstacles.
Although the final results were not as hoped, every student left the competition with a smile. The experience provided hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics - beyond what a textbook could offer.
The Junior Team A placed fourth, Junior Team B placed fifth and the Senior Team secured fifth place, marking a notable improvement from last year.
The Macleans College EPro8 Club has grown rapidly, expanding from one team in 2024 to three in 2025. This achievement reflects the dedication of Mr Ali, whose commitment made the teams’ participation possible.
