Refining knowledge: Economics students visit iconic sugar factory

From exam papers to icing sugar, Macleans College Economics students experienced a full day of academic challenge and hands-on discovery.

The morning began early, with many students arriving to sit the annual New Zealand Economics Competition, organised by the University of Auckland’s Business School. The exam tested their economic knowledge through a series of multiple-choice questions.

Following the competition, Level 3 students boarded a bus to the Chelsea Sugar Refinery in Birkenhead.

Established in 1884, the factory remains New Zealand’s leading producer of sugar for household and commercial use.

The visit allowed students to observe a real-life production process and explore the economic factors behind the refinery’s location. They also examined the regulatory constraints affecting the factory, imposed by both local and central government.

During the tour, students explored the production site and tested their understanding in an interactive learning zone.

The highlight of the day was an hour-long baking session with Chelsea’s in-house patisserie chef. Students prepared yoyo biscuits, which they carefully packaged to take home and share with their families.
