Year 12 and 13 Drama students inspired by Red Leap Theatre’s Wrest

Earlier this month, Year 12 and 13 Drama students from Macleans College attended a performance of Wrest, the latest original production by New Zealand company Red Leap Theatre, staged at Q Theatre.
Known for their bold visual storytelling, Red Leap Theatre delivered a compelling piece of physical theatre exploring the complexities of motherhood. The performance combined movement, sound and image to create an emotionally rich and visually striking experience.
Described as ‘a collision of fierce physicality and tender storytelling’, Wrest explored themes of care, sacrifice and identity. The production used minimal dialogue, relying on expressive movement and design to create a poetic yet raw atmosphere.
The students were deeply engaged by the performance. The interplay of physical movement, evocative lighting and a haunting soundscape sparked thoughtful reflection. Back at school, they discussed key moments, analysed dramatic techniques and shared personal responses. For the Year 13 students, this experience was especially valuable as they will reference Wrest in their external Drama examination later this year.
Exposure to high-quality devised theatre in a professional setting is an enriching experience. It not only introduces students to innovative storytelling but also highlights the transformative power of live performance to challenge, inspire and provoke meaningful conversation.
