Macleans College students in Years 9 to 11 recently gathered to hear from one of New Zealand’s finest authors.
Chloe Gong, author of the internationally acclaimed These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends, addressed an assembly of junior students. Her duology is both a global success and a New York Times number one bestseller.
Following the assembly, Chloe met with selected English classes to discuss writing and creative expression. She offered practical advice for aspiring authors, sharing tips on storytelling and navigating the publishing industry.
A central message of her visit was the importance of creativity in young people’s lives. She challenged the common belief that success is limited to business or conventional careers. Instead, she emphasised that fulfillment often comes through creative pursuits.
Chloe spoke passionately about the power of storytelling. Through characters and narratives, she explained, writers develop empathy and a deeper understanding of others - qualities essential for meaningful lives and careers.
She also encouraged students not to overlook the opportunities in the arts. As someone who has risen from Aotearoa to global recognition, Chloe’s own journey stands as proof that creative ambition can lead to real-world success.
