Bollywood Showdown 2025: Macleans College students celebrate Indian culture

The vibrant annual event celebrates the richness of Indian dance and culture, drawing in secondary school performers from across Auckland.

This year marked the group’s first performance at the Victory Convention Centre. The venue provided a professional setting, with space for students to prepare and designated seating for performers to enjoy watching other groups.

Organised by Rahul Chopra and his team, the Bollywood Showdown Competition brings together secondary school dance groups to compete in a celebration of Indian classical and contemporary dance styles. A total of 23 groups participated in this year’s event.

The Macleans College team performed a six-minute routine choreographed by student leaders Lakshmi Thilakeswaran (Te Kanawa House), Lakshya Narooka (Hilary) and Deeksha Suresh (Mansfield). These leaders also created the music track and led all rehearsals. Their efforts reflected both patience and professionalism, guiding the group with dedication to ensure they were ready for the competition.

Their dance routine featured a fusion of Kathak, Bharatnatyam and Garba styles. Performances were judged on a range of criteria, including synchronisation, formations, transitions, confidence, energy, expression, emotion, costumes, choreography and execution. Several awards were presented on the night, supported by sponsorships, door sales and group entry fees.

Macleans College is grateful to parent helpers Ms Thilakeswaran and Ms Jayasinghe, who provided valuable assistance in preparing the students in their saris - a complex and time-consuming process requiring experience and care.

The group not only represented their school with pride but also honoured their cultural heritage through dance. Their commitment, energy and collaboration were a testament to their talent and enthusiasm.
