Year 13 Digital Technology and Computer Science students from Macleans College ended Term 3 with an inspiring visit to Google’s Auckland office.

The experience gave them a behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s leading technology companies and the chance to hear directly from Google experts about how technology, creativity and education intersect on a global scale.

Steve Smith, Education Country Manager at Google New Zealand, spoke about the hiring process, life at Google and the importance of failure as a tool for growth. His message resonated with the students, many of whom aspire to careers in software development, computer science and the wider IT industry.

The group also heard from specialists working on Google Maps and Google Ads. The maps team shared how the app was born out of necessity, while the ads team explained how advertising drives Google’s business model.

Students left the visit motivated and equipped with fresh perspectives on how creativity, problem solving and global thinking can shape their own future pathways.
