Thanks to Read NZ’s Writers in Schools programme, the Macleans College Library was pleased to host author David Riley for two engaging presentations.

David began by sharing his ancestral roots and reflecting on the diverse cultures that have shaped his identity. He has written over 100 books, many celebrating Kiwi and Pacific Island heroes.

With an affable manner and a blend of humour and inspiration, David captivated Year 10, 11 and 12 students. He shared stories about American neurosurgeon Ben Carson and NBA player, New Zealander Steven Adams, highlighting how their interest in reading helped shape their careers.

David’s own path to becoming an author spanned three decades. Despite numerous rejections from publishers, he persevered and eventually established his own publishing company, The Reading Warrior - a testament to his determination and resilience.

The Macleans College Library proudly holds 45 of David’s print titles. His visit reinforced a powerful message: reading can truly enrich lives.

The Writers in Schools programme continues to inspire thousands of students nationwide, encouraging a lifelong love of reading and writing.
