The annual Macleans College Ambrose Golf Day was held last month at the Howick Golf Club.
The eighteen-hole competition encouraged junior students to try golf and promoted the sport to those who had never played before. The field included both experienced and first-time golfers, with four teams competing.
Team Lee, led by talented golfer Cherry Lee (Batten House), won the event with an impressive score of six under par. The team also included Celine Moon (Mansfield), Aliya Witchalls (Kupe) and Hannah Deng (Snell).
Team Grose placed second with a score of one under par. The team members were Dr Grose, Riley MacGillivray (Mansfield), Tighe Healy (Mansfield) and Owen Viljoen (Batten).
Team Van Heerden finished third, returning two over par for their round. Mr Van Heerden was joined by Max Li (Batten), Evan Pitman (Rutherford) and Matt Lee (Hillary). Evan, who is new to golf, said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Team Rao featured two novice golfers. Carter Overend (Rutherford), a strong rugby player trying golf for the first time, partnered with his left-handed friend Ghazi Rizvi (Rutherford). They quickly discovered that golf is a challenging sport, especially on the hilly Howick course.
Golf concluded around 2.00 pm. Four of next year’s Upham House executives prepared a barbecue for the players, who enjoyed sausages and soft drinks. Team Lee received a sleeve of golf balls each.
The players extend their thanks to Mr Packer for securing sponsorship for the barbecue.
